Every song, its own voice.

Search the name and you will find an artist page, a catalog, a few million streams, and no rapper. Chill's Spotlight is not a person. It is a series, and the person behind it is Charles "Chill" Patton, who co-founded 1st & 15th with Lupe Fiasco back when the label was named for the two days a month the checks came. Chill's job on this series is the oldest one in the building: he listens to everything, keeps what should have never been shelved, and puts a light on the people who deserve one. The frame stays the same every time. The voice inside it changes.

It started on June 21, 2019 with "Run Game," a Lupe record from the 1st & 15th vault produced by The Buchanans, premiered by Complex. "Hey Lupe" followed that October through The FADER, and Chill told the story himself: he got the beat, played it twice in a white Suburban on the way to the studio, and twenty minutes later Lupe had the whole song down, verses, hook, ad-libs. In Chill's words, "This is when I knew he was a Monster." The self-titled EP that collected those early singles arrived February 14, 2020, and the series had its first shape: vault records, dusted off, with the story attached.

Then the volumes started counting, and each one belonged to somebody.

Vol. 2 (February 18, 2022) split time between Lupe's "Hustlaz" and "Fah Real" and the roster: TDK with LaJé and Shaky Shawn on "Novocaine," Billy Blue on "Active," Iamcompton on "One Off." Vol. 3, Dak's Playlist (September 16, 2022), is named for Chill's son Dakari, who drew the manga-style covers for both volumes, and it handed the mic to Shayla G and Gemini alongside two Lupe cuts, including "The Pen and the Needlz," produced by Needlz.

Vol. 4, Spirit of Chicago House (February 10, 2023), is the one that proves the frame can hold anything. Vince Lawrence, who helped build house music in this city, produced all five tracks, with Peter Jericho, Lil G from Silk and Mira Black on the vocals and a house remix of Lupe's "Wild Child" in the middle. Vol. 5 (March 17, 2023) went the other direction and gave the entire spotlight to one voice, Shayla G, a Blue Island rapper who has been with the label since the early days. Vol. 6, Underground (October 13, 2023), was the first volume Chill released home, and it opened on "Out There," a Lupe record from the vault, before Billy Blue, OT The Real, Un Kasa and Gemini each took a turn.

Then the numbers got playful. Vol. 8 came out November 14, 2025 and turned the series toward R&B: Troy Tyler on "Me and Mine" and "Can't Be Your Man," both produced by Soundtrakk, B. Howard closing with "Beautiful Nightmare" and "Gone," and Chicago's own Frayne Vibez on "No Comparing," a record built for a top-down run up Lake Shore Drive. Vol. 7 came out after it, on May 1, 2026, which is why it is called Forgotten 7. Verse opens with "Flowers," Ray follows with "Sonic," Lupe's "Crash Out" sits in the middle, and Billy Blue's "GOG" and TDK's "I'll Run To You" close it out. Chill never throws anything out. He just gets to it when he gets to it.

That is the whole idea. Eight volumes, a dozen-plus voices, one curator, and a rule that the featured artist is always the artist. The series is only ever the frame.
